Until recently I didn’t know what the Friendship Four was and again until recently I didn’t know that our very own Mayor could ice skate! You learn something new everyday in this line of work.
“The Friendship Four Tournament celebrates the Boston/Belfast Sister city agreement by helping to foster stronger cultural, economic, and academic partnerships between Northern Ireland and America. Sport has the ability to unite communities and provide a conduit to revitalise the deep and broad cultural ties between America and Northern Ireland”
This would be an ideal opportunity to get some behind the scenes footage of Nualas work. It first started on Wednesday this week when she joined some of the junior ice hockey players on the ice. I didn’t know Nuala could ice skate so it was really cool to see her whizz about on the rink. She grabbed a hockey stick shortly after to try some penalty shoot outs. Three out of three of course!
Moving on to Friday I would call in again for an hour as Nuala was to drop the puck just before the match would start. Before this she met an american marching band up in W5 and walked down to the ice rink with them. The music they were playing was fantastic!
We made our way on to the ice where the teams and crowd stopped to sing the American national anthem. All four matches in Belfast were being broadcast to several American TV channels as well as BT Sport for local viewing. Great to see events like this coming to Belfast, long may it continue.
